Our Fabulous Rescue Dogs In Southern California

««——We Also Have Schnauzers In Northern California.
Take a Look At Them Too.——»»

More than 100 Rescued Dogs Placed Per Year, For The Last Two Years, Now In New Homes

Congratulations to our fantastic Rescue Committee!! We hope you enjoy seeing photos and stories about some of the Schnauzers we have placed—but, first, please see if you can provide a great new home for one or more of the dogs below who are still waiting for their new homes.

Foster Homes URGENTLY Needed

We urgently need foster homes in Southern California. With the terrible economy, more and more dogs are being surrendered by owners, most shelters are full, and we are being called upon to rescue many more Schnauzers than in the past. If you are in Southern California, please call John Hoffman, 818 790-4172, for further information if you are able to help out, or email him at canada@dslextreme.com.

Schnauzers In Southern California Who Need a New Home Now

Nick—Nick Needs Help!

Photo of Rescue Dog Nick Xray of Rescue Dog Nick

Nick is a really cute 3 year old Schnauzer mix with a personality to match.

Sadly, Nick was hit by a car and the upper part of his leg was shattered as can be seen in the xray we got from the East Valley shelter in Van Nuys, from which we rescued Nick on January 25, 2012.

Nick had surgery to repair his leg on January 26. Dr. Raviv Balfour, Nick's surgeon, said Nick is “awesome.” He expects Nick to make a full recovery.

Photo of Rescue Dog Nick after surgery

Nick moved to his foster home on January 27. He is able to walk outside to go to the bathroom, but he needs to stay off the leg as much as possible—and he needs to wear an Elizabethan collar for 2 weeks. Nick hates the collar

The surgery cost just over $3,200, and Nick's follow-up care will cost about $500 more. We need some help because that is way more than we can afford to spend on one dog.

Please help with Nick's surgery expenses if you can. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, so contributions are tax-deductible as charitable contributions. Please send a check payable to California Miniature Schnauzer Rescue, and mail it to our Treasurer, Walter Poeth, 13890 Andover Drive, Magalia, California 95954. Walter will send you the receipt you need to take a tax deduction. Please also note (on the check, a Post-It, or a separate sheet of paper) that the money is for Nick's surgery.

As of January 29, we have raised about $1,800 towards the cost of Nick's treatment. That's a great start, but just about half of what we need. Many thanks to Tricia Schlosser, The Blue Room for Women, Maria Anastasi, Marsha Umbour, Penny Sprague, June Williams, Jacqueline Smith, Shafali Lambsblood, Suzanne Jennings, Patricia Gregoire, Jerri Miller, Brenda Ponce, and Jan Silverman for donating towards Nick's expenses.

Contact John Hoffman (canada@dslextreme.com) for more information about Nick.

Bernadette

Photo of Rescue Dog Bernadette Photo of Rescue Dog Bernadette

This is Bernadette. She is a mix of white Miniature Schnauzer and . . . we are not sure what. What we are sure is that Bernadette is very cute and very loving. The shelter estimates her age as about a year old. We think that is about right. We rescued her from the San Bernardino City shelter on February 1, 2012.

Bernadette weighs about 20 lbs. She appears to be in good health. She likes other dogs, and loves to cuddle. She walks pretty well on a lead.

Bernadette is current on her DAPP vaccinations and is microchipped. She will be spayed and given a new rabies vaccination before placement.

Joyce Nagel is fostering Bernadette in Palmdale. Please submit a completed Adoption Application form if you'd like to adopt Bernadette. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for more information about Bernadette.

Cassie

Photo of Rescue Dog CassiePhoto of Rescue Dog CassieWe received 3 Schnauzers from the Hesperia shelter on January 13, 2012. Two have been adopted.

Cassie, the remaining Hesperia Schnauzer, is a 9 year old black female Miniature Schnauzer. Cassie had a severe ear infection when we got her. We had her ear treated and it is coming along nicely.

Cassie is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations.

Joyce Nagel is fostering Cassie in Palmdale. Please submit a completed Adoption Application form if you'd like to adopt Cassie. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for more information about Cassie.

BabyDoll

Photo of Rescue Dog Baby Doll

Baby Girl is a 3 to 4 year old purebred female salt & pepper Miniature Schnauzer. She was surrendered by her owner who is no longer able to care for her. Baby Girl weighs about 14 lbs.

Baby Girl is friendly with people and gets along well with other dogs. She is housebroken.

Baby Girl appears to be in good health. She is up-to-date on vaccinations. She will have to be spayed upon placement.

Carol Hansen is fostering Baby Girl in Stanton (near Garden Grove). Please submit a completed Adoption Application form if you'd like to adopt Baby Girl, but send it to hansenhausminis@yahoo.com. Contact Carol at (714) 527-8850 for more information about Baby Girl.

This is a courtesy listing for Miniature Schnauzer Club of Southern California Rescue, www.mscsc.org, which provided the above information.

Jesse

Photo of Rescue Dog Jesse Photo of Rescue Dog Jesse

Jesse is a purebred male black & silver Miniature Schnauzer. Jesse was one of 5 puppies and 5 adults surrendered to us by a breeder who was no longer able to keep them. Jesse is about 4 years old.

Jesse and the others are of a quality rarely seen among rescue dogs; and Jesse has a gorgeous head.

Jesse is friendly and great with other dogs.

Jesse is in good health. He is neutered, up-to-date on vaccinations, and has had his teeth cleaned.

Joyce Nagel is fostering Jesse in Palmdale. Please submit a completed Adoption Application form if you'd like to adopt this exceptional Schnauzer. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for more information about Jesse.

Caitlin

Photo of rescue dog Caitlin Photo of rescue dog Caitlin

Caitline is a senior purebred salt & pepper female Miniature Schnauzer. She is about 12 years old. We rescued Caitlin from the L.A. North Central the very day she was to be euthanized.

Sadly, Caitlin has a heart murmer, enlarged heart and enlarged lungs. We have started her on Enalapril to reduce the stress on her heart.

Caitlin is doing well at this point. The vet estimates that Caitlin has about 6 months to a year left. We are looking for an adopter who will make that time the happiest of Caitlin's life.

Caitlin is quietly affectionate with people. She loves other dogs and was flirting shamelessly with a 50 lb male retriever while she was at the vet's. She is quiet and enjoys being petted and going on walks.

Caitlin is housebroken, spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations.

Caitlin is in a temporary foster home in Pasadena. If you would like to adopt Caitlin, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact John Hoffman (canada@dslextreme.com) for more information about Caitlin.

Liesl

Photo of Hannah's puppies

Liesl was one of Hannah's six von Trapp puppies, 3 boys and 3 girls, who we named after the children in the Sound of Music.

Mom is purebred Miniature Schnauzer Hannah, who turned out to be pregnant when we rescued her from the Devore shelter a day before she would have been euthanized. Hannah had a urinary tract infection when we adopted her. When we took her to the vet, he said she was pregnant and he advised against trying to spay her then.

Five of the von Trapp puppies have been adopted. Liesl, the smallest and sweetest, is still available. We think Liesl will probably look like a small purebred black Miniature Schnauzer when she matures.

Joyce Nagel is fostering Liesl in Palmdale. Please submit a completed Adoption Application form if you'd like to adopt this super nice puppy. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for further information about her.

Albert

Photo of Rescue Dog Albert Photo of Rescue Dog Albert

Albert is a male purebred salt and pepper Miniature Schnauzer. We rescued Albert from the West Los Angeles shelter, after he appeared on the “New Hope” alert list.

The shelter estimated Albert's age at 3 years old. We think he is between 2 and 3. He weighs about 23 lbs.

Albert is friendly. He allowed Joyce to groom him without complaint within a half hour after arriving at her place and clearly is used to being groomed. He was quiet while being groomed even with another dog being groomed right next to him and with 2 cats on an adjacent table.

Albert appears to be in good health. He is neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations.

Albert is living with Joyce Nagel in Palmdale. If you’d like to adopt Albert, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for further information about Albert.

Nick

Photo of Rescue Dog Nick Photo of Rescue Dog Nick

Nick is a purebred male salt & pepper Miniature Schnauzer. We rescued Nick from the Devore shelter the day before he was scheduled to be euthanized.

Nick is about 7 years old. He has natural ears and a docked tail.

NIck is a happy and friendly guy. He gets along very well with other dogs and even with cats.

Nick appears to be in good health. He is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations.

Nick is living with Joyce Nagel in Palmdale. If you’d like to adopt Nick, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for further information about Nick.

Gary

Photo of Rescue Dog Gary

Gary is a super-cute little 7-month old purebred black Miniature Schnauzer. We rescued Gary from the Los Angeles South shelter on September 8, 2011. Both of his femurs (upper leg bones) were fractured at the neck and he was in a lot of pain.

We took Gary striaght from the shelter to an orthopedic surgeon to get his legs fixed. Gary is now walking, running, and playing, but still needs to develop more strength in the muscles of his hind legs. He had a lot of skin problems when we got him. Antibiotics, medicated shampoo, etc., have cleared up the skin problems, but it is probably still best to wash him with shampoo for sensitive skin.

Gary loves people, children and other dogs. We have not had him around cats, but he'd probably be fine with a cat who likes dogs.

Gary is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, and microchipped.

Gary is living in La Cañada Flintridge, just west of Pasadena. If you would like to adopt Gary, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact John Hoffman (canada@dslextreme.com) for more information about Gary.

Gloria

Photo of Rescue Dog Gloria Photo of Rescue Dog Gloria

Gloria is a purebred female salt & pepper Miniature Schnauzer. The shelter estimated her age at 3 years old, but we think she is about 1 1/2 years old—perhaps even younger.

Gloria is a smart, happy little girl. She figured out how to use the dog door in minutes, wishing to be on the same side of the door as her new foster dad. She loves playing with the other dogs in her foster home and she allowed us to groom her without complaint.

Gloria is in good health, housebroken, neutered and up to date on her vaccinations. Gloria’s teeth are sparkling white.

Gloria is living in La Cañada Flintridge, just west of Pasadena. If you’d like to adopt Gloria, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact John Hoffman (canada@dslextreme.com) for further information about Gloria.

Kobie

Photo of Rescue Dog Kobie Photo of Rescue Dog Kobie

Kobie is an 8 year old purebred white Miniature Schnauzer. Kobie's owner died and left him to a caretaker, who dumped him at the Lancaster shelter, from which we rescued him.

Kobie is a happy guy—look at that smile! He is very friendly and he loves to run around the grass and play.

Kobie is neutered, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. He appears to be in good health, but he is missing some teeth.

Kobie is living in Palmdale. If you’d like to adopt Kobie, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for further information about Kobie.

Lonnie

Photo of Rescue Dog Lonnie

Lonnie is a neutered, black Miniature Schnauzer, who came to us from the Lancaster shelter. He appears to be about 7 to 8 years old. Lonnie is a lively little guy who loves to play. He is friendly with other dogs and with cats.

Lonnie appears to be housebroken since he never messes in the inside part of his run. He's generally in good health but lost one of his eyes after it became badly infected, apparently because the former owner allowed matted hair to cover the eye for a long time. (We had the eye removed to avoid any chance of infection to the rest of his system.) Fortunately, Lonnie sees just fine out of his remaining eye.

It is time for Lonnie to get a great home for the rest of his life. You won't find a better friend anywhere. Lonnie is neutered, microchipped and up-to-date on vaccinations.

If you'd like to adopt Lonnie, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Lonnie is being fostered by Joyce Nagel in Palmdale. Contact Joyce at (661) 947-3537 for further information about Lonnie.

Benji

Photo of rescue dog Benji

Benji was found in Indio, near Monroe Gate. Benji appears to be a Schnoodle (a cross between a Schnauzer and a Poodle).

While Benji's heritage may be unknown, he appears to be young, with glistening white teeth. What is certain is that Benji is very friendly and loving.

If you know who Benji belongs to, or if you might be interested in adopting Benji, please call Deanne Thomas at 760-610-2623 or email her at deeannethomas@msn.com.

This is a courtesy listing for Deanne Thomas, of the Safe House Committee of the SCSH Pet Club, who provided the above information. We have not seen or evaluated Benji.

Winston

Winston is a white male Miniature Schnauzer mix. His foster, who found him together with Olivia, believes he is a year or less old. He weighs about 29 lbs.

Winston is affectionate with people and likes other dogs. He and Olivia are both interested in cats but don't seem aggressive towards the cats. Winston and Olivia enjoy each other's company, but do not seem to be psychologically dependent on each other, so they could be placed separately.

Winston is in good health and up to date on vaccinations. He will be neutered before placement.

Winston is living in Temecula. If you’d like to adopt Winston, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact John Hoffman (canada@dslextreme.com) for further information about Winston.

Olivia is a grey female Miniature Schnauzer mix. Her foster, who found her together with Winston, believes she is a year or less old. She weighs about 29 lbs.

Olivia is affectionate with people and likes other dogs. She and Winston are both interested in cats but don't seem aggressive towards the cats. Winston and Olivia enjoy each other's company, but do not seem to be psychologically dependent on each other, so they could be placed separately.

Pepper

Photo of Rescue Dog Pepper

Pepper is an 9 years or younger male, black Miniature Schnauzer mix who ended up at a Los Angeles Animal Shelter when his elderly owner could no longer take care of him. Pepper is well past the puppy stage so you don't have to worry about him chewing your slippers, but he has plenty of get-up-and-go and loves brisk walks around the neighborhood.

Pepper lost most of the sight in one eye due to a  prior injury but that doesn't slow him down one bit. He has blossomed once the trauma of the animal shelter was behind him and he settled into his foster home. Pepper still displays a bit of anxiety when he is surprised, but he is very affectionate, has lots of love to give, and is a very sweet guy who would love a new forever home. He will provide a lot of love in return.

Pepper appears to be in good health. He has had his teeth cleaned, is up to date on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped. As you can see from the photos, Pepper is no longer the raggedy mess he was when he came from the shelter.

Small dogs like Pepper typically live to be 15 years or older so he has plenty of active years left to be your best friend and keep you company. Pepper is currently being fostered in La Cañada, near Pasadena.

If you'd like to adopt Pepper, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Contact John Hoffman (canada@dslextreme.com) for further information about Pepper.

Candi

Photo of Rescue Dog Candi

Candi appears to be a Miniature Pinscher/Miniature Dachshund mix. Candi is an 11 lb bundle of energy, about 5 years old, who also enjoys cuddling and having her belly rubbed. Candi came to us from an elderly lady who loved Candi, but who was developing Alzheimers and forgetting to feed Candi.

Candi loves playing with toys, including shaking the living daylights out of the toys while growling menacingly. She likes other dogs. Candi is demure around male dogs, but wants to be the alpha among female dogs. However, she is friendly with female dogs who realize that Candi is boss.

Candi is a bit stand-offish with strangers at first but becomes friends within 5–10 minutes. She is very playful and very active. Candi is spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccinations. She is housebroken and knows how to use a dog door.

If you'd like to adopt Candi, please submit a completed Adoption Application form. Candi is with MSCNC member John Hoffman (canada@dslextreme.com) in southern California, near Pasadena.

Shane and Cricket—Adoption Pending

Photo of Rescue Dog ShanePhoto of Rescue Dog Cricket

Shane is a white Miniature Schnauzer mix. Cricket is his girlfriend.

Cricket and Shane are the most adorable little dogs ever! They are such a wonderful pair.

Tragedy struck Cricket and Shane when their beloved owner passed away suddenly. It didn't break their spriit but now, these loving, friendly and super-cute dogs URGENTLY need a new home. The goal is to place them together.

Cricket and Shane both are well behaved in the house and love to play with their toys. They are very affectionate. Cricket is a typical bubbly girlie girl and Shane is a friendly, mellow guy. They love to go for walks andcar rides but are just as content snoozing on soft pillows at home. They are young and happy and you can't help but fall in love, when you meet them!

Shane is neutered and Cricket is spayed. Both are current on vaccinations and both will be microchipped before adoption.

For further information on Shane and Cricket, contact Ingrid at pcdrapps@yahoo.com; (310) 480 6030.

This is a courtesy listing for Pacific Coast Dog Rescue, www.pcdogrescue.org, which provided the above information. We have not seen or evaluated Shane or Cricket.

Julio—Missing

Julio is a very cute Schnauzer mix who MSCNC tried to rescue on August 16. Julio is about 1 1/2 years old and was very frightened by life at the East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys, CA. His former owners had done nothing to socialize Julio and he doesn't even know how to walk on a leash.
The shelter lost Julio and another small dog, Howie, while delivering them to a veterinarian's office for neutering on August 17. MSCNC Rescue Committee member John Hoffman walked the neighborhood on August 17 and 18 and posted flyers about the two dogs. On August 18, John located someone who had found Howie. Howie's original adopter backed out after the shelter lost Howie, and the person who had found Howie decided to adopt him from the shelter. There is still no word yet on Julio. Please say a prayer that someone has found Julio and that he is safe. The shelter had microchipped Julio and registered him to John, so we are hoping that we will yet hear about Julio.

In Memoriam

Our goal is to place as many Schnauzers as we can so that they can live out their lives in happy homes. Sadly, we cannot save every Schnauzer who comes into a shelter. Some, unfortunately, are too old and too sick to place. We honor their memory.

Rerun

Photo of Rescue Dog Rerun Photo of Rescue Dog Rerun with friend, Tessa

It is always sad to lose one of our dogs, but we were at least able to provide Rerun with a happy time before he passed away.

Rerun was a senior male Schnauzer-Chihuahua mix. He could have been as old as 15, but he was pretty spry and enjoyed going on walks.

A wonderful lady, Carol Ebbinghouse, agreed to foster Rerun, knowing that the odds were that we would be unable to place him. She has has a cat, Hershey, and a Schnauzer, Smokey. Rerun got along well with both Hershey and Smokey and became the “boy-toy” of the neighbor's small female dog, Tessa, pictured beside Rerun.

Carol fostered Rerun for almost 6 months until he developed dementia and started to attack Hershey who, understandably retaliated. By then, Rerun no longer recognized either Carol or Tessa.

Carol is one of the true heroes of Rescue. Thanks, Carol, and thanks Hershey, Smokey and Tessa for making Rerun feel so welcome.

Ewok

Photo of Rescue Dog Ewok

Ewok was a salt & pepper male Miniature Schnauzer, about 2 years old.

Ewok had natural ears, a natural tail, and a heart of gold!

Ewok was super-friendly. All the volunteers who saw him at the shelter loved him. One even shot a video of him, and was heard to say in the video: “What a sweetheart.”

We thought the shelter could find a new home for Ewok faster than we could, since we already had 7 dogs up in Lancaster where we would have had to put him. We listed him on this page and suggested to a couple of potential adopters that they go look at him.

Sadly, Ewok died at the shelter on June 25, 2011, probably of pneumonia. He deserved a lot better.

Dave

Photo of Rescue Dog Dave Photo of Rescue Dog Dave

Dave was a very affectionate neutered male Miniature Schnauzer, about one year old. Dave weighed about 11 lbs when MSCNC member John Hoffman rescued Dave from the Los Angeles North Central shelter on June 19, 2009, though his normal weight should have been 12–13 lbs. Dave was on death row because he had nipped a technician at the shelter who frightened him, but Dave became a happy, trusting dog within hours after arriving at John's.
The photo on the left is Dave doing his best to hide at the shelter. The photo on the right is a much happier Dave, a couple of days after arriving at John's, wearing his Elizabethan collar so that he wouldn't tear out his stitches from being neutered.
Tragically, Dave came down with parvovirus about a week after arriving at John's, even though the shelter had vaccinated Dave upon intake. Dave died despite our best efforts to save him. Dave's death points up the necessity of keeping vaccinations current. Dave was vaccinated by the shelter upon intake but apparently was exposed to the parvovirus before his immunity had had time to build.
